Do you think there's a story in these tracks? I thought maybe a mouse got caught -- a theory strengthened when Sallie sniffed out a small fresh partial skeleton of something or other, picked clean and surrounded by some bird droppings. But the tracks don't match the mouse track drawings I have from www.bear-tracker.com. More like a chipmunk, which is also possible. Don't know about the larger tracks, either -- but they're sort of like a raccoon's. Do raccoons eat chipmunks? Maybe no story at all -- just a track crossing.

Storm early this morning brought down some limbs in our neighbor's section of woods and made a mess for them (but not for us). Also eliminated my early morning walk.

A power surge knocked out my coffee maker, though. Panic time. Well, not panic. Heated water on the stove and poured it through the grounds for an emergency cup of java. Then it was to Farm and Fleet for a new coffee maker -- followed by a trip to the eye doctor to pick up my new glasses, and a trip to the crop protection place to get our bottom land transferred -- and still no walk.

After lunch, then, and into the heat which wasn't as bad as yesterday, but still too hot for a long walk with Sallie. She sat down.

Yes -- no heat advisory, anyway. Sorry, I hit post after I put in my steps, but before I wrote my blog!

NO COFFEE-----I would have been in immediate withdrawal----and would have done the saem thing you did---anything to get some coffee---at least first thing in the morning.  Thanks for your well wishes on the storm yesterday.  We all made it just fine.  The wind knocked a few limbs down from the tree in our front yard----but nothing big at all----thank goodness.  Hope your family members in Lake Charles made it okay.

I use individual coffee 'tea bags' for coffee on the weekends since my wife doesn't drink the stuff.  I can't remember the last time I used my coffee maker.  I just get a cup of hot water from the water cooler and away I go!

Decided to compare your tracks with several animals I know of in the IL area, but didn't see a match.  I compared the tracks with raccoon, coyote, cougar, and just for fun, badger.  The tracks are too fat to match a typical coon track, but then again, it could have been a fat coon.

Opossum around, but don't think so. Also muskrat and foxes around, but...

Certainly there's a story in those tracks - you just may have to make up your own.

Panic time with the coffee maker broken. I'm glad you got right on it and bought a new one immediately. You've got your priorities right.

Are your new glasses intersting?

Regular glasses are about the same as before -- though I now no longer have to take them off to read! Went for the vanity on my sunglasses, though -- big lenses, bigger frames in dark plastic, a bit retro. Learned immediately that, though cute, they aren't great for walking! Wanted to slide down my sweaty nose. Vanity, vanity, all is vanity...

I would have panicked over the coffee also!!

I don't know if racoons eat small animals or not, but I guess they kill slow fat turkeys.  At least that is what someone that works at a riding stable told me.  They had other animals that ran free (peacocks, turkey, bunnies etc)to entertain children.  And, I guess, the racoons were a problem because they would kill the slow fat turkeys.

Hm -- so that answers that question! I should have put down a coin or something to give an idea on size (not that I was walking with any coins in my pocket). Those small tracks are pretty small.

Sallie knew what she was doing when she sat down!  You still have wonderful steps!

Nice tracks! Sorry aout the heat. I have transition glasses, but they are not dark enough to filter out the brightness. So I wear polaroid Fitovers, large sunnies that fit over my regular glasses. I get headaches when I forget to wear them. Not at all fashionable, but functional.
