I started walking when I was 58 to get healthier.  Then when I was 60, I stepped it up a notch and started running. 

The running has been fun, but now I have a back injury and it is all I can do to get some walking in.  I feel better when I push myself and walk.  I do hope to eventually run again.   I stand by my advice to take things slow as you increase your activities.

All of my steps are steps.  I do lots of strength training and stretching.  But I do not use step equivalents. 
Using step equivalents I would get about 30% more steps.  See @hose
